Children with reading challenges are bright, creative, and capable — they often just need instruction that aligns with how their brains process language.
When that happens, reading begins to make sense, and children start to see themselves as confident learners.
Shine Literacy provides structured, sequential, multisensory literacy instruction grounded in the science of reading. Sessions are paced to each child's level of mastery, allowing for steady, meaningful progress.
The Science of Reading
Structured literacy is the most effective, research-backed way to teach children with dyslexia and reading difficulties. Each lesson follows a proven plan.
Explicit & Systematic
Skills are taught directly, step by step, in a carefully sequenced order. Nothing is left to chance or guesswork.
Multisensory
Seeing, saying, hearing and touching engage multiple senses at once, creating stronger neural pathways for reading and spelling.
Mastery-Based
We never move on before a concept is truly solid. Each child progresses at their own pace — mastery is the milestone, not the calendar.
Strengths-First
Every session is shaped around what your child can do. We build on strengths, celebrate wins, and create a space where it's safe to try.

ABOUT JENNIFER
Teacher. Mom. Art therapist. Counsellor.
I'm Jennifer Korchinski — an elementary educator, Wilson Reading System tutor, and a mom who has walked the dyslexia journey alongside my own children.
My background in elementary education gave me a deep understanding of how children learn and where gaps can quietly emerge. When my own children struggled with reading, I began searching for answers and discovered the Orton-Gillingham approach. It was transformative. Structured, multisensory, and grounded in how the brain processes language, it not only helped my children learn to read, but also rebuilt their confidence.
I went on to complete my Wilson Reading System certification so I could offer the same evidence-based support to other families. With a master's degree in art therapy and child counselling, I recognize that reading challenges are often about more than academics. They affect confidence, self-belief, and a child's identity as a learner. Every session I create is designed to be a space where children feel safe, capable, and truly seen.
I've sat where you're sitting. I understand the worry, the frustration, and the hope. And I know how powerful it is when things finally click. When a child begins to read, and believe in themselves again.

Real Stories. Real Progress.
Every child begins in a different place, and progress looks different for everyone. These anonymous stories highlight the kinds of growth that can happen through consistent, structured literacy instruction.
Starting Point
A Grade 3 student came to Shine Literacy feeling frustrated by reading. They avoided reading aloud, struggled to decode unfamiliar words, and were beginning to lose confidence in the classroom.
Our Focus
Using structured, multisensory literacy instruction, we worked on phonemic awareness, decoding strategies, and reading fluency through consistent one-on-one sessions.
The Outcome
Over time, reading became less overwhelming. This student developed stronger decoding skills, increased their reading fluency, and began approaching books with greater confidence, both at school and at home.
COMMON QUESTIONS
Questions parents often ask
-
No — a formal diagnosis is not required to begin tutoring. Many families come to us because they notice their child is struggling with reading or spelling and want help right away. Structured literacy benefits all children learning to read, and especially those who aren't responding to classroom instruction. We will do our own intake to understand your child's current level and design instruction accordingly.
-
We primarily work with children in Grades 1 through 8 (approximately ages 6–14). The Wilson Reading System is particularly effective for students who are struggling despite prior instruction. If your child is outside this range, reach out — we're happy to talk about whether we can help.
-
Wilson Reading System is a highly structured, scripted program based on the Orton-Gillingham approach. Unlike general tutoring, it follows a specific sequence of phonics and word structure concepts — each building on the last — and requires mastery at each level before moving forward. It's designed specifically for students with dyslexia or significant reading difficulties, not just for homework help.
-
For best results, weekly sessions are the minimum. Two to three sessions per week leads to faster, more sustained progress. Consistency matters. Students who attend regularly and practice at home between sessions tend to see the most meaningful gains.
-
We're happy to communicate with teachers or resource staff with your permission. We can share what we're working on in sessions and provide information that may help your child access support at school. School and tutoring work best when they complement each other.
-
Yes. Online sessions via secure video call are available and work very well for structured literacy instruction. Many families outside Edmonton or with busy schedules prefer this option. Materials can be mailed or printed at home.
